Homemade soap can be done as a hobby, business, or perhaps neccesity. There are four basic methods to making your own; melt and pour, cold process, hot process, and re-batching. The melt and pour method requires pre-made blocks of unscented, uncolored soap. This is a base. It can be bought at a craft store. The base is melted. Once it is totally melted you can then add the fragrance, color, and any other additive. This method is very popular because it is easy and inexpensive, and can be done with few ingredients.
The cold process is making it from scratch. Chosen oils are heated to approximately one hundred degrees, then the lye-water mixture is slowly added, and blended until it thickens. It needs to reach an important state known as trace, a point where the mixture will not separate back into its original oils. After it reaches trace, fragrance, colors, and additives are put into it. It needs to harden for twenty-four hours, and cure for about four weeks before it's ready to use. This is a popular method because the maker controls the ingredients and it is truly made from scratch. A negative of this method is the direct contact with lye. The hot process is a variation of the cold process in which ut is cooked.
Re-batching is a process by which you take the product that has already been made and re-batching it by grating it, and melting it. Once melted you can add additional ingredients, colors, and smells. This is not a common method the soap can only be as good as what you start with.
Another way to make homemade soap is to make goat milk soap. Goat milk soap contains natural emollients, vitamins, and tryglycerides such as capric-caprylic that moisturizers the skin. It is less drying and harsh than regular homemade soap. Goat milk replaces water when making homemade soap, and can be incorporated using fresh goat milk, powdered, or evaporated milk. Making goat milk soap over regular soap is strictly up to the individual. Goat milk soap can be slightly better for your skin.
